Tragedy erupts in an instant. Lives are shattered irrevocably. A young man drives off into the night, leaving a girl injured, perhaps fatally so. From that cliff-hanger opening, Sarah Leipciger takes readers back and forward in time to tell the haunting story of one family’s unravelling in rural logging country where the land is still the economic backbone. Like the novels of Annie Proulx, this debut is rooted in richly detailed nature writing and sharply focused on small town mores and regional culture.

“The Mountain Can Wait is a wild and wonderful book, full of big landscapes and beguiling lives. It's written in a kind of spare, heartfelt prose that's muscular and beautiful, and perfectly befits the tale that's told. I loved it.” – Emylia Hall

Novel Writers

Each month we invite a debut novelist to read from and talk about their work in an informal setting. Prior knowledge of the text is not essential. Topics of discussion include theme, structure, inspiration and the craft of writing. These sessions are a great way to discover new writing talent and great books.
