Brutal and beautiful in equal measure, Elmet is a compelling portrayal of a family living on the fringes of contemporary society, as well as a gripping exploration of the disturbing actions people are capable of when pushed to their limits.

Fiona Mozley’s debut novel is described as ‘A hugely potent story about aspects of hidden England,’ that ‘builds to a terrifying climax‘ by the judges of the Man Booker Prize 2017, for which Elmet was shortlisted.

Fiona Mozley was interviewed for our Novel Writers: The Warm Up podcast

“Elmet is a rich and earthy tale of family life, sibling relationships, identity, how we define community and the power struggles inherent to so many different dynamics.” – Zoë Apostolides, Financial Times

Fiona Mozley

Fiona Mozley (b.1988, Hackney, London) grew up in York. She studied at The University of Cambridge before moving to Buenos Aires for a year – without speaking any Spanish. After briefly working at a literary agency in London, she moved back to York to complete a PhD in Medieval Studies at the The University of York. Elmet, her first novel, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2017.

Novel Writers

Each month we invite a debut novelist to read from and talk about their work in an informal setting. Prior knowledge of the text is not essential. Topics of discussion include theme, structure, inspiration and the craft of writing. These sessions are a great way to discover new writing talent and great books.
