Hannu Karjalainen

Portraits

Finnish artist Hannu Karjalainen came to Bristol on a three month residency in 2005.

The residency was a collaboration between Picture This, Watershed and Spike Island and the three organisations worked together to select Hannu and to commission and produce a series of new works. His work ranges from moving image installations to still photography and the qualities of both media are often mixed and examined in his work. His work is inspired by his interest in portrait painting and photography. The works can be seen as studies on the themes of recognisability and absence as well as meditations on the fragility of human life.

His past exhibitions include Avanto Media Art festival and Helsinki Photography festival and a solo exhibition in the Hippolyte gallery, Helsinki. In 2009 Hannu was awarded Young Artist of the Year by Tampere Art Museum, Finland. Hannu is represented by Gallery Hippolyte, Helsinki. Finland.
