Nahraine Al-Khafaji graduated with a First-class degree in Fine Art from Bath Spa University in 2025, and was awarded a Graduate Fellowship at Spike Island from 2025-26.

Al-Khafaji is an Iraqi-British artist, raised between England and the Middle East. This contrast in culture informs her study of ancient Iraqi history and its relevance in the western world she resides in.

Her practice explores the fragility of regional histories after catastrophe and conflict, where pasts once well documented are later found unintelligible. Troubled by the recent destruction of archaeological sites and artefacts, her paintings echo significant losses of the earliest civilisational history. Viewers are encouraged to interpret her works by filling conceptual gaps with their own personal narratives. The paintings can’t be fully comprehended as the histories remain fragmented.

Nahraine Al-Khafaji is a winner of the 2025 Freelands Painting Prize.
