Dhaqan Collective is led by Fozia Ismail and Ayan Cilmi. Their practice seeks to find ways of building imaginative futures that support Somali people here and in East Africa to resist the threats over our cultural heritage. They are a feminist art collective of Somali women, centring the voices of women and elders in our community, and privileging co-creation and collaboration.

The collective uses everyday materials, cassette tapes, food, and textiles, to create spaces of communion, joy and healing that centre the full range of Somali diasporic experiences.

Their work has been commissioned by or featured in Arnolfini, Sharjah Art Foundation’s March Meeting, Watershed’s Pervasive Media Studio, M Fest for the British Library, LSE, Battersea Arts Centre, Southbank Centre, Serpentine Gallery, Venice Biennale Architettura 2023 as part of Watery Stories within Dangerous Liaisons at The Laboratory of the Future, Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Weltmuseum (Vienna), Wellcome Collection, Counterpoint Arts, B-Side festival and Visual Arts South West.

Longlisted for the International Ways of Repair, Loss & Damage Award 2023.
