Spike Island is excited to announce that it has been awarded Active Membership by the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC).
As of May 2025, Spike Island joins over 1500 arts and culture organisations working internationally as Active Members of the GCC. The announcement comes as a result of Spike Island demonstrating its commitment to environmentally responsible best practice by taking meaningful action to reduce its climate impact.
As well as identifying Spike Island as being committed to climate action, Active Membership provides a framework within which members are held to account. Ongoing actions required of Active Members include:
- annual climate audits and reporting
- a working Green Team, whose job it is to implement best practice within their organisation and collect and analyse data
- publishing their environmental responsibility statement, with Spike Island’s available to view here.
SPIKE GREEN FUTURES
In 2024, Spike Island embarked upon Spike Green Futures, a campaign to become carbon neutral by 2030 in line with Bristol City Council’s ‘Mission Net Zero’. Working with partners across the South West, including Spike Island creative tenants Connolly Wellingham, actions include:
- installing solar panels, which have already reduced our use of grid electricity by 30%
- reducing gas usage by installing local water heaters throughout the building
- prioritising ship freight over air freight when transporting artworks
- switching to an environmentally friendly waste company, meaning that none of our building refuse goes to landfill
- reusing left over exhibition materials and offering them to local communities
Now, with the support of the GCC, Spike Island continues its commitment to being an environmentally responsible organisation alongside other leaders in the arts and culture sector.
