THE ROLE

  • Full time, permanent
  • 35 hours per week
  • £30,000 per annum

Spike Island is seeking a highly organised, proactive and creative Communications Officer to help us shape dynamic relationships between art, artists and audiences. You will lead the delivery of Spike Island’s communications and audience development plans to support the effective realisation of our artistic programme and business plan. Working across departments, you will play a key role in enabling the organisation to grow and diversify its audiences, increase engagement, and maximise revenue.

The Communications Officer is responsible for delivering Spike Island’s external communications, ensuring that the organisation’s brand and values are clearly reflected, and building the organisation’s local, national and international profile.

You will work closely with our external PR agency to increase recognition of our programmes, services and the artists we work with. We seek someone who can effectively manage our digital channels, including our website, e-communications and social media, with a commitment to increasing accessibility. An enthusiasm for data and analytics will help us communicate our impact.

As Communications Officer, you will also deliver constructive and inspiring communications for our internal community of artists, creative businesses, students, staff and trustees. You will also oversee the timely delivery of signage and interpretation materials across our building and galleries, as well as work with our Visitor Services Team to ensure a welcoming visitor experience. You will be supported by a part-time Communications Assistant.

The successful candidate will be diligent, highly organised and able to work to deadlines, with excellent written and editorial skills. A successful track record in managing communications is essential, with a particular focus on digital.

This full-time role is based on-site at Spike Island, with home working available by prior arrangement with your line manager. Normal working hours are 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday. This role will involve working occasional evenings and weekends according to the needs of the organisation, for which time off in lieu will be provided.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental to Spike Island and we are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity in recruitment and employment. We consider diversity to be a strength and are therefore keen to make our workforce more representative of the different backgrounds and experiences that make up our city.
