Spike Island Exhibition Services installed the UK premiere of ‘Arcadia’, a multi-screen film by legendary artist and filmmaker, John Akomfrah. Commissioned by The Box in Plymouth, ‘Arcadia’ is presented across five large screens in the shape of a cross, with eighteen channels of sound. With beautiful visuals of landscapes from across the globe, stunning underwater footage and a haunting soundtrack, the film reflects on ‘The Columbian Exchange’ – the widespread transfer of plants, animals, precious metals, commodities, populations, technology, diseases and ideas between the Americas, Afro-Eurasia and Europe – the ‘New World’ and the ‘Old World’ – from the 1400s onwards.
SIES worked closely at all stages with The Box curatorial team and museum staff, on the technical development and planning for the exhibition. On-site installation required much care and attention to detail to meet the exhibition brief, working closely with John Akomfrah and the Smoking Dogs Films team to fine tune the installation to completion.
