William Hilless graduated with a degree in Fine Art from UWE Bristol in 2025, and was awarded a Graduate Fellowship at Spike Island from 2025-26.

Hilless is an artist and writer from London. He works between layers of abstraction, truth and non-truth, where there are no distinctions between emotional and political storytelling. He often uses a language of diffusion and saturation, where people, places and events bleed into each other, as a way to explore how global architectures structure our thoughts and emotions.

Hilless often plays with imagery from the detritus of globalisation, using poetic structures to consider how we become haunted by collective sentiments and repeated gestures. Softness is an approach that can be both caring and violent; he’s interested in collective coping mechanisms and finding soft spots within them.

With a conceptual interest in photography, Hilless appropriates photographic terminology and processes to reconsider representations, and to think about how things cast themselves onto others over time.
