For one night only, artists from our Sculpture Studios present subWOOFER with Ancient and Modern. This pop-up exhibition is the third in a series of shows being organised by members of the Spike Island community in a new, temporary gallery space. The events showcase and experiment with the breadth of activity that goes on in the building.

subWOOFER with Ancient and Modern takes the idea of an absent loudspeaker, a low pitched audio-frequency too low to be heard transmitting from Colin Higginson and Marcus Jeffries' work The Metropolis of Tomorrow. Perhaps instead, subWOOFER, Ancient and Modern as characters could be recognised as the wonky stick-and-bone members of Anton Goldenstein's rock-band in Dutch Gothic. Either way, these works act as the gravitational pull for pieces by Helen Grant, Steve Joyce, Philippa Lawrence, Suzanne Mooney, Victoria Coombes, Michael Hayter, Kevin Wright and Annabelle Craven-Jones in an attempt to draw together common understandings of the primordial, animistic, ancient and the brand-spanking-new visionary yesterday of the modern.

Entrance to the pop-up gallery space is at the rear of the building on Sydney Row, and we’ll be running a bottle bar.
