Curated by Smith + Fowle, Shelf Life was the first collaborative project between Gasworks Gallery, London and Spike Island, Bristol. Both organisations combine artists studios, international residency programmes and gallery spaces, within central city locations, making them uniquely suited to supporting projects that explore the creative potential of this mix of activities.
The exhibition presented thirteen artists and collectives from Europe, South Africa and North and South America who simultaneously embrace and challenge consumerism in their practice.
Following extensive research, the curators drew together a selection of artists many of whom were unfamiliar to UK audiences, although established or emerging in other parts of the world. The exhibition Shelf Life comprised of a range of commissioned and existing work.
