Join Ore and Ingot for a three day introductory course to learn how to cast bronze using the lost wax ceramic shell process. Gain the basic skills and hands-on experience of bronze casting in a safe and supportive environment, and leave with a cast of your own.
Day 1: A short introduction to bronze casting and a discussion around what people would like to cast. This includes an introduction to wax working and mould making.
Day 2: Finish wax working and introduction to runners, risers and sprue making. Step one of the casting process – making the waxes into a mould that will be able to receive molten metal.
Day 3: Pouring the bronze and finishing work on the sculptures. Ending with a mini exhibition of the finished work, a chance for everyone on the course to see each other's work.
What can I cast?
Anything you fancy! We can either replicate an object that you’ve brought with you or use direct wax casting (carving into wax a design that will be cast into bronze.) The simpler the object the better; with very few protruding elements but as many interesting textures as possible. From 3D printed shapes, to chickens feet, to bells – bring your ideas with you! If you’re concerned that your item may be complex to cast, please contact us before beginning the course.
How big will it be?
As this is an introduction to bronze casting, we will cast objects up to the size of your hand, and a maximum of two pieces per person.
