As part of this year's Spike Island Open we have invited studio holders and members of Spike Associates to submit recent video works, reflecting the rich range of moving image work produced by the artistic community here.
The artists variously explore analogue film's relationship to sculpture, live performative actions to camera and the influence of other genres on Video Art, such as science fiction cinema, theatrical melodrama and the language of advertising. Many of these works also feature specially composed scores that create a tension between the images depicted and the directional role of audio.
In addition, we have asked artist Sean Edwards, who previously exhibited here in 2011, to select his favourite pieces. The first four films, Beacon For John Cabot Tower (Semaphore Line) by Laura Phillips (see above), Screen #3 (super 8) by Hannah James, Stage by Maia Conran, and Mandelbox Tribute by Bristol Diving School, are particularly recommended by Sean.
