We’ve been working hard over the last year as an organisation to think about how we describe what we are, both for our internal community and our wider audience. Are we a gallery? Artists’ studios? Offices? The answer is that we’re all of these, plus a café, printmaking studio, home to arts organisations like Picture This and neighbour to others like Bristol Diving School.
We are a base for some 500 creative practitioners, including artists, designers, curators, students, animators, filmmakers and journalists. We also bring the most interesting and challenging of international contemporary art and design to Bristol in the form of exhibitions, talks, activities and residencies. The connections generated between all these people, their work, and the public are what make Spike Island unique.
It is this sense of cross-pollination that we have tried to translate into the new website. It makes links between events, exhibitions and people and allows for us to share news and multimedia content more fluidly. Our approach is to illustrate broadly what Spike Island is through presenting what happens here in the building as well as what our network of artists and designers get up to out in the world.
The site is having a soft launch – we know not everything is perfect, so we hope you can bear with us as we make small changes and add content. Archive material will be available over the coming weeks: if you are looking for any specific information on a past exhibition or event, please contact us and we would be happy to provide it.
